Overview for Exploring Perolniyoc Waterfall

At only 30 minutes from Ollantaytambo, hidden in one of the ravines next to the Huarocondo Canyon lay 3 treasures disguised in the slopes: Raqaypata, Perolniyoc and Naupa Iglesia. These stops offer an immersion in the Inca history, architecture and religious practices. They can be visited in a morning and are a perfect fit for those looking to delve deeper in the Inca heritage.

How to Get There from Ollantaytambo

To visit this route from Ollantaytambo you have to:

  • Take a taxi to Socma, the trailhead. It takes between 30 to 40 minutes.
  • From Socma, it will take about 1 hour to Perolniyoc.
  • After the waterfall, the trail goes uphill for another 30 minutes to Raqaypata.
  • The visit to Naupa Iglesia can be done in your way out. It is a short hike, 15 mins, from the train bridge on the way back to Pachar.

Perolniyoc Waterfall

The stunning Perolniyoc waterfall drops over 100 meters into a deep pool, creating a unique scenery. Rock boulders carved by the water for centuries in combination with lush vegetation, create the perfect aura for the Andean worship of water. You can take a break to refresh and capture some pictures of this place full with energy and mysticism.

Exploring Perolniyoc Waterfall

Raqaypata Ruins

Raqaypata is an archeological site, that sits right above the Perloniyoc Waterfall. Archeologists believe it was used as a ceremonial center, focused on the cult of water and fertility rituals. It features several stone structures and agricultural terraces. Its strategic location reinforces the theories that connect this site to the ceremonies related to water and its life-giving forces.

Naupa Iglesia

On the way back from Socma to Ollantaytambo, you will find a train crossing. From there you can follow a trail, clearly labeled, to Naupa Iglesia. It takes only 15 minutes. This is a unique archeological site, even under Inca standards.

This structure was carved into a massive boulder and features finely cut trapezoidal niches, false doors and an altar. These structures suggest this place was used for rituals connected to the cosmology or astronomical studies. It is still a mystery, filled with enigmatic energy.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Perolniyoc, Raqaypata, and Naupa Iglesia is during the dry season (May to October) when trails are firm and skies are clear.

  • May–June: Lush green landscapes after the rains.
  • July–August: Sunniest skies and popular among trekkers.
  • September–October: Warm weather and fewer crowds.

During the rainy season (November–April), the waterfall is at its most powerful, but trails can be slippery.
