This ancient network of trails, built by the Inca civilization more than 500 years ago, takes you through spectacular Andean landscapes to the legendary citadel of Machu Picchu. If you are considering this unique adventure, this guide will help you choose between the various Inca Trail tours available and learn about the best alternatives to the Inca Trail.

What is the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu?

The Inca Trail is a world-famous hiking route located in the Peruvian Andes that leads directly to the ancient Inca city of Machu Picchu. Along its 43 main kilometers, this ancient trail transports you through breathtaking mountain landscapes, lush cloud forests, and fascinating Inca archaeological sites.
The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu culminates in the unforgettable experience of watching the sunrise over Machu Picchu from the mythical Sun Gate (Intipunku), just as the ancient Incas did. This is the only route that allows you to reach Machu Picchu by walking along the original trails built by this extraordinary civilization.

2-Day Inca Trail vs. 4-Day Inca Trail.

Distance & Fitness Level

  • 2-Day Inca Trail: Covers about 12 km (7.5 mi), with a mix of uphill and downhill sections. The hike is shorter and less demanding, though altitude (over 2700 m / 8800 ft) still requires some stamina. A good option for travelers with moderate fitness.
  • 4-Day Inca Trail: Covers about 42 km (26 mi) over multiple passes, including the iconic Dead Woman’s Pass at 4215 m (13828 ft). This trek requires higher endurance and fitness, with long hiking days of 6-8 hours.

Price

  • 2-Day Inca Trail: Generally $400 – $500 USD, depending on the operator and inclusions.
  • 4-Day Inca Trail: Usually $650 – $800 USD, with premium or private tours costing more. The higher cost reflects the longer logistics, extra camping equipment, and porters.

Who is Each Trip For?

  • 2-Day Inca Trail: Perfect if you’re short on time or budget, want a taste of the Inca Trail, and still dream of entering Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate (Inti Punku). Ideal for travelers who may not be ready for multi-day hiking at altitude.
  • 4-Day Inca Trail: Best for those who want the full iconic experience, combining stunning ruins, varied landscapes, and the challenge of following the original Inca route. Great for travelers with more time, higher fitness levels, and a bigger budget.

FAQS

The best months are from April to October, during the dry season in the Andes. May, June, and September are especially recommended since the weather is clear, trails are less muddy, and the mountain views are at their best. The trail is closed every February for maintenance.

Prices vary depending on the length of the trek and the operator. On average:

  • Classic 4-day trek: $650 – $800 USD
  • Short 2-day trek: $400 – $500 USD
  • Luxury or private options: $1,000+ USD. These usually include permits, guide, porters, meals, and camping equipment.

Starting in Ollantaytambo saves travel time and makes logistics smoother. Since Ollantaytambo is closer to the trailhead and Machu Picchu, you’ll spend less time on buses and trains, and more time enjoying the hike. Cusco departures are common, but often mean an earlier start and longer transfers.

If you’re looking for an affordable alternative, check “69 Explorer“, it is popular among budget travelers. It combines the Inca Trail experience with lower costs, and includes scenic train and bus connections, meals and guides.

Permits are very limited and sell out fast, sometimes 6 to 8 months in advance, especially for the high season (May–August). If you plan to hike during these months, book as early as possible. For shoulder months, 3 to 4 months in advance may be enough, but last-minute availability is rare.
