Can I get Machu Picchu tickets at the last minute?
The truth is that getting a last-minute ticket to Machu Picchu is not the best option. However, it is still possible to get a ticket just a few days before your trip to Peru. You can buy your ticket in person at Aguas Calientes. Here is the correct information for finding a last-minute ticket to Machu Picchu.
How last-minute tickets work in Aguas Calientes
- Go to the Ministry of Culture office in Aguas Calientes. This is the only place to purchase tickets in person.
- Have your original passport or ID ready. You must present your identification to purchase the ticket.
- Check availability. Tickets are sold first come first served and there are limited quantities.
- Purchase your ticket. If tickets are available, you can buy them for the following day visit.
- Consider staying overnight. If tickets are sold out, you may need to stay in Aguas Calientes and try again the next day.
- Be aware of time slots. Tickets are assigned to specific time slots and you must enter within that time.
- Have cash in soles. Payment at the Aguas Calientes office is in cash only.
In conclusion, booking in advance is your optimal strategy. Although it is possible to visit Machu Picchu at the last minute by purchasing one of the 1,000 daily tickets released in Aguas Calientes, it comes with risks such as long queues, limited circuit availability, and the need to stay at least one or two extra days. There is also a chance of not getting a ticket during high season.

DAY 01: Cusco | Train to Aguas Calientes
Highlight of the day: Enjoy one of the most scenic train journeys in the world as you descend through the Andes into the lush cloud forest.
Your 2 day adventure begins early in the morning when we pick you up from your hotel in Cusco at 4:00am and transfer you to Ollantaytambo. There you will board the 6:10am Expedition train that takes you through breathtaking landscapes of valleys, rivers and high jungle, gradually descending to the town of Aguas Calientes, the gateway to Machu Picchu.
Upon arrival at 7:40am, your guide will be waiting to welcome you and accompany you throughout the process of getting the tickets. Our guide will help secure an early number in the queue at the Ministry of Culture office, which opens at 3:00pm. Together you will walk through town, visit the ticket office to purchase your Machu Picchu entrance tickets in person with your original passport and cash in soles, and get familiar with the area. The ticket will be purchased by yourself with the full assistance of our guide.
Later you will enjoy lunch not included at one of the top local restaurants. In the afternoon you will have time to explore Aguas Calientes at your own pace. You may choose to visit the hot springs, stroll along the river, or relax in one of the many cafes surrounded by the green peaks of the cloud forest while our guide holds your place in line.
In the evening you will have dinner with your guide and receive a detailed briefing for the next day visit to Machu Picchu. Afterward we recommend resting early to be ready for the highlight of your trip.
Please note: On Day 1 we travel to Aguas Calientes and do our best to secure your tickets for Machu Picchu for Day 2. People queue from 4:00am for numbers, so our early arrival gives you the best chance.
