Full Itinerary for the Inca Trail hike to Machu Picchu 1 Day
Day 1. Cusco to Km 104 to Sun Gate to Machu Picchu to Cusco
Early Morning Pickup and Train to Km 104
Pickup will be at 4:00am from your hotel in Cusco. You will travel through the Sacred Valley to the train station in Ollantaytambo in our private van. If you are staying in Ollantaytambo, pickup will be at 5:30am.
At the station your guide will provide you with a boxed lunch to carry in your daypack. The Expedition train leaves Ollantaytambo and travels through the Sacred Valley for about an hour and a half until you arrive at the start of the trail at Km 104.
Cross the bridge over the beautiful Urubamba River, show your passport at the checkpoint, and you are ready to start the 1 Day Inca Trail. Visit a nearby Inca ruin before heading off on a gentle uphill hike for about one and a half hours. Stop several times to take photos of the spectacular mountain views and the river below. The last two hours of the hike are steeper but you will be rewarded at the end with a wonderful waterfall.
Wiñay Wayna and Box Lunch
Take some time on the bridge below the waterfall, take photos and gaze at Wiñay Wayna in the distance. On arrival at these impressive Inca ruins, your guide will explain the wonderful history of the site. Some parts are still hidden beneath the dense jungle that surrounds it. You will get a great insight into Inca architecture and daily life.
Our wonderful lunch spot is just a short walk away. Savor every morsel of your delicious hearty gourmet box lunch while enjoying your surroundings complete with tropical flowers and lush cloud forest. At the time of booking, please tell us about any dietary restrictions or food allergies.
Sun Gate to Machu Picchu
After lunch, continue on a mostly flat walk to the Sun Gate. This hour long walk has a gentle up and down path, but it does end with a set of steep stone stairs carved directly into the bedrock by the Inca, known as the Gringo Killer steps. Once you reach the stairs you are almost at the Sun Gate.
Arrive at Inti Punku, the Sun Gate, and see your first breathtaking view of Machu Picchu. Take in the majesty of the site and enjoy the moment. This is the perfect place to take those wonderful panoramic photos. The hike down to Machu Picchu is an interesting mix of smaller ruins and incredible views. Ask your guide to explain the importance of the places you pass along the way.
Guided Tour of Machu Picchu and Return to Cusco
On reaching Machu Picchu, take more photos from the viewing platforms above the citadel known as the House of the Guardians. As you will arrive in the afternoon, the site will start to empty, giving you the opportunity to take beautiful photos in the soft afternoon light with fewer people.
Enjoy a two hour guided tour of Machu Picchu where you will learn how Machu Picchu is divided into three main sectors: agricultural, residential, and religious. Your guide will share the legends and mysteries of this incredible city.
Take your time to enjoy this magical experience before you take the bus down to Aguas Calientes.
In the evening at 6:20pm you will take the return Expedition train to Ollantaytambo and catch our private van through the Sacred Valley back to Cusco and your hotel. You will arrive around 10:00pm. If you upgrade to the Vistadome train, you will depart Aguas Calientes at 6:10pm.
